Your description reminded me a lot of notes from underground. While the narrator was frustrated about the rise of nihilism at the time, the spirit feels the same. Clever but mediocre man blaming the world for his inability to live up to his own heroic grand image. I thought maybe it was directly inspired by that book.

This hits suspiciously close to home lol

Is this the first in a series on this theme? Hopefully!

You said it hits close to home- if you're talking about yourself, I'd say your capacity to to consider whether you are this sort of man in an open way shows that you are not.

If you do, run far away. I wasted good years and good emotions being a friend to one. They are emotional vampires. They secretly delight in their misery and in making other people miserable with their misery although they are socially obligated to deny it. They are worse than useless because they cause other people to waste their energy on futility.

I'm not in a crisis but it's kind of you to ask after my wellbeing.

I'm describing a particular kind of person I have met many times over the decades of my life, a specific type of egocentric character.
