Once upon a time I felt like I’d wasted a day- which always makes me very miserable. Anyway, I figured that if I could make 1000 people smile, it wouldn’t count as a waste, so I thought up a plan. I’m part of several fan communities for Sufjan Stevens. What if Gilbert Gottfried (voice of Iago from Aladdin) read, on video, the lyrics to Futile Devices? So, by skipping a about 8 takeout meals to put the money together, I made it happen, and then posted it as a video to Facebook. Lot of happy people, good times:
This Substack has been running for about two months now, and we have 165 subscribers. We’ve built up a nice chunk of content as well, which is also great, but I’d love your advice- what can I do to get the word out about this Substack? Also, in addition to your advice I’d love your help- is there anything you could do to get the word out? I hope wanting to get the word out doesn’t seem egotistic- it’s just that we get a lot of positive feedback from people who do this blog- but not many do! Any advice, or help, is appreciated.
Feel free to talk about Gilbert Gottfried, marketing this blog, or anything totally unrelated in the comments of this open thread. As always, suggestions for future blog topics are always appreciated.
It's been a long, long time Since I've memorized your face It's been four hours now Since I've wandered through your place And when I sleep on your couch I feel very safe And when you bring the blankets I cover up my face
I do Love you I do Love you
And when you play guitar I listen to the strings buzz The metal vibrates underneath your fingers And when you crochet I feel mesmerized and proud
And I would say I love you But saying it out loud is hard So I won't say it at all And I won't stay very long
But you are life I needed all along I think of you as my brother Although that sounds dumb
I don’t really have any particularly good ideas for getting the word out, but I can at least provide the datapoint of how I got here. I had previously read a few of your posts from your old blog, but never really got to the point of going from one post to another on the blog (as opposed to all of them being from external links).
What ended up doing the trick for me was the Reddit links to this substack, which led to me reading the few posts that were up on here at the time, then subscribing.
Hi! I found your blog at its old website, "deponysum," and I forget how. If I could remember that organic process, this might be more helpful.

I think the latest intentional design update here on Substack should help--your profile now lists the blogs you subscribe to as a default. This should allow the commentariat at any given Substack to find the blogs that their fellow commenters follow.
The fact that you do put out really interesting work is a big plus. I've name-dropped your website a couple of times in conversation now, because (unfortunately) your work is very niche. That's a blessing and a curse. You're publically filling a hole that most people aren't aware exists.

Thank you, this is helpful to know. It's as I suspected.

Thank you, it's always wonderful to know that people are enjoying your work.
