I don't think we'll go extinct, though I see the possibility. And regarding timelines, I very much doubt a murder-suicide; AI won't kill us off while they still need us.
My words of comfort seem not to work, alas. Two points: the *way* ur-AI is killing is off is by making our lives so rich, meaningful, engaging... *fun* that fertility rate has dropped below replacement for the rich smart half of humanity already; this is a good death. And you *could* think of them as our descendants, children; our DNA - well, our corpus - is in them, at least the LLMs.
